Chapter Eight
Alex
Sawyer walked into my office three weeks later, concern laced on his features. I'd gotten used to seeing his brow furrowed in the past several weeks that we'd been working and essentially living together. Though not officially since I still kept an apartment. I only ever went there to pick up clothes, but still, I had it.
“Everything all right?” he asked me.
“Yeah, why?”
“Nothing. It's just Patrick said it looked like you were falling asleep at your desk, and I wanted to make sure you were all right.”
I wanted to roll my eyes, but I knew my match wouldn’t appreciate it. Patrick always had his nose in my business. He never had a nice thing to say about me or my work. But Sawyer seemed happy with his work, so I didn't complain.
“I'm fine,” I said. I’d yawned a lot today and I’d had at least two extra cups of coffee to battle the fatigue weighing me down, but I wasn’t falling asleep. “Someone kept me up all night, but I’ll get through the day.”
“Really?” he said. “Maybe we ought to talk to that primary of yours. He works you too hard.”
This time I did roll my eyes. “Not that again, Sawyer. I don't know why you just don't give up already. You can admit defeat.”
“Never,” he said.
“That wasn't part of the deal,” I said. “Clearly, our working relationship and personal relationship don't interfere with one another. Can I keep my job now?”
Sawyer put on his business face. His expression flattened and a coldness took over his demeaner. “You are doing amazing work, but I don't think we've given it enough time. And shouldn't we be thinking about testing for a certain condition?”
“Hush,” I said. “You'll jinx it. I'll test when we're ready.”
“Still, if you're tired, isn't that a symptom?” He features brightened as the topic changed. His eyes lit up with joy at the prospect of a pregnancy.
“Yes, it's also a symptom of a lack of sleep.” I didn't mention that breakfast had not sounded good this morning. I had forgone my usual cup of fruit and oatmeal, and instead munched on crackers. In fact, my stomach still rolled at the thought of food as I sat at my desk.
Tina, one of the individuals on my team came to my door. “Alex, we've got the invitations here. They're in the conference room.”
“Awesome.” I pushed away from my desk and stood. “That gives us three hours to get them all stuffed and ready to go.”
Sawyer blocked the path out of my office. “Are you sure you'll be able to handle that today?”
I shot Sawyer glare. “Yes. Although I hope you don't mind staying a little bit late. It shouldn't take that long. All we have to do is make sure everything's correct and start stuffing envelopes, they should be addressed correctly and then we'll drop them off to the post office to be delivered.”
“I don't mind. I've got plenty of things to keep me busy. I’m just worried about you.”
“I’ll be fine, I promise.
